What even is an IBCLC?
What is an IBCLC? You have seen the term IBCLC tossed around and wondered, “What on earth does that mean?” Figuring out who can give you the level of support you need can be confusing, so let’s break it down. IBCLC stands for “International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.” This is the gold standard credential for supporting and managing breastfeeding families. IBCLCs are highly trained, experienced, and passionate professionals who can come from medical backgrounds like midwifery or nursing, or non-clinical backgrounds (like myself).
To earn this qualification, a candidate must complete at least 1,000 hours of clinical practice supporting families with lactation concerns. They also need at least 95 hours of lactation-specific education and 5 hours focused on communication and listening skills. For those without a medical degree, there are 14 health sciences courses to complete, which must be at least a level 3 qualification. After meeting these requirements, applicants can sit for the 4-hour exam and then wait three months to find out if they passed. To maintain their certification, IBCLCs must recertify every five years by completing 250 hours of support and then either retake the exam or earn 75 hours in lactation education, with 50% of those in areas determined by a personal professional development plan.
Becoming an IBCLC requires a significant investment of time and money. It’s a protected title, meaning all IBCLCs must adhere to a strict code of ethics and are listed on the IBCLC register. They are equipped to support simple lactation difficulties as well as complex cases and can assist families at any stage of their breastfeeding journey. The IBCLC credential is globally recognized, ensuring that you receive top-tier support no matter where you are.
