CCK – The Rest and Digest Hormone!

The role of CCK and falling asleep at the breast:

Cholecystokinin (CCK) is this fascinating little gastrointestinal hormone that gets released when a baby starts suckling and gives the vagus nerve a nudge. CCK is also released when the stomach empties and food makes its way into the small intestine. But here’s the fun twist: it’s also released during breastfeeding, and it sets off oxytocin, which makes both mum and baby feel all relaxed and sleepy. Levels of CCK spike as soon as feeding starts and then dip about 10 minutes later. So, if you’ve ever noticed your baby dozing off at the breast only to wake up hungry shortly after, you’re not alone! It’s just the CCK doing its thing. After the initial wave, the milk starts digesting, and the baby might go for round two. Another CCK wave hits around 30 minutes in, and yet another around the 60-minute mark.

The main gig for CCK is helping with digestion; it gets the gallbladder to release bile and the pancreas to unleash enzymes, all crucial for breaking down proteins and fats. We all produce CCK, and it’s the reason you feel delightfully stuffed after a big meal (like that post-Christmas dinner bliss). But breastfed babies might get an extra dose since it’s in the milk, too! So the next time your little one dozes off while nursing, no worries—just let them chill. They’re probably just taking a little break before coming back for “dessert”! Of course if you’re worried your little one isn’t getting enough milk, it’s a good idea to seek support from a breastfeeding trained professional!
