Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I book a consultation with an IBCLC?
IBCLC is the only globally recognised and regulated lactation qualification. The holder of the qualification has specialised and qualified in the clinical management of breastfeeding, chestfeeding and infant feeding.
Being an IBCLC recognises, that the individual has met the requirements to sit, and has passed the IBCLC exam.
IBCLCs come from a range of backgrounds, medical, non-medical and work in a wide variety of settings. They are passionate about breastfeeding and chestfeeding, with experience in assisting mothers and parents and their babies to breastfeed or chestfeed. They also have knowledge and specialised skills in the clinical management of all methods of infant feeding and across a wide age range of babies. IBCLCs are sensitive to the specific needs and wishes of mothers/parents and babies, to work towards their desired infant feeding goals. Whilst also supporting the whole family unit.
IBCLCs are knowledgeable, experienced in a wide variety of complex breastfeeding and chestfeeding situations. Individual IBCLC’s practices and approaches will vary, but they are all ethical professionals and their practice will be up-to-date, and evidence based.
Research has recognised that working with an IBCLC can improve the care parents
and infants receive, and breastfeeding goals are more likely to be achieved.
What happens during a consultation?
During a consultation, I will discuss your concerns and breastfeeding history. I will observe a feeding session and may offer suggestions to enhance your experience. We will go over my observations together and develop a plan that suits you. I’ll also provide you with notes summarizing our conversation via email following the consultation.
Do I need to be exclusively feeding with breast/human milk to access your support?
Absolutely not. At SR Lactation, I am here to support parents and mothers, no matter what their journey looks like. Together we will find a breastfeeding approach that suits you and your family’s needs.
Do you support chestfeeding parents?
SR Lactation is committed to supporting all families in their breastfeeding journey, regardless of their unique circumstances. I believe that your sexuality, gender, or language preferences should never be a barrier to accessing the support you need.
How does payment work?
After you complete the initial intake forms, you will receive an invoice via email detailing the expected payments. Your appointment will be held for 24 hours, during which time your payment is due. If payment is not made within this period, your appointment will be released and may be booked by another client. Payments can be made via PayPal or direct bank transfer, whichever you prefer.
I need support, but can not afford a consultation, what are my options?
At SRLactation I understand that financial concerns can be a barrier to getting the support you need. There are several options available to help you. You can reach out to local breastfeeding support groups, community health centres, or lactation consultants who offer sliding scale fees or payment plans. Additionally, many online resources and support forums can provide valuable information and assistance. Please let me know if you need help finding these resources – some of which are listed on my ‘free support’ page, and I will do my best to guide you.
Can I buy the gift voucher for a friend?
Yes! What a lovely idea. Email me at: srlactation@gmail.com to organise
Can you divide or diagnose Tongue Ties?
Steph Richards IBCLC is a lactation professional but is not a qualified Tongue Tie Practitioner, so cannot diagnose or release tongue ties. At SR Lactation, I can perform oral assessments, discuss my findings with you, and provide referrals if necessary. We strongly encourage you to seek support from a qualified Tongue Tie Practitioner (Association of Tongue Tie Practitioners) if breastfeeding problems persist.
Do you only support face to face?
If you’re in need of support but are not within my area, I’m happy to offer video or phone calls. Check out my service options to find out more.
How far will you travel for home appointments?
I offer consultations within a 15 mile radius from my home address in Taunton at no additional charge. For locations beyond this radius a travel fee of £25 will be chargeable.
